Driving the Convergence of Computing and Communications

Over a decade ago, Emergin had predicted that the convergence of computing and communications would change how businesses operate. Connectivity is not for the novice, which is why Emergin assumed the challenge of helping businesses integrate discrete technologies to collect, aggregate and distribute actionable events to an assigned person at the right time and to the appropriate personal communication device. And, these events are recorded through their life cycle so that enterprises can playback their communications to continuously improve processes, quality and patient satisfaction.

Communications science is the study of interactions between humans and machines. It involves a seamless integration of disparate technologies to provide end-users with transparency regardless of operating system, service or device. Since its inception, Emergin has been helping enterprise organizations build an IT architecture that effectively manages multiple best-in-class technologies to optimize workflows and human efficiencies.

In healthcare, every second counts when it comes to patient care. Emergin is applying aviation-based principles to help hospitals improve communications with the goal of reducing communication errors for patient incidents. Today, most hospitals spend approximately 4 – 12 weeks to identify the root cause of an adverse event, if the documentation is still available. By integrating best-in-class technologies, Emergin’s technology can provide traceability throughout the patient life cycle and proactively notify staff of process exceptions, improving patient satisfaction and the quality of patient care.

In aviation, the FAA had experienced major communication bottlenecks during 9/11, requiring a more robust and efficient communications platform. Emergin helped the FAA operations command centers improve their operator dispatching capabilities and reduce their communication delivery time with security officers from 1-1/2 hours to less than 6 minutes. During 9/11, the FAA realized that every second counts when trying to notify staff of catastrophic events.

In manufacturing, assembly line uptime is critical for their operations. Every second of downtime could lead to thousands of dollars of lost productivity. Emergin’s technology interfaces with SCADA systems to proactively alert plant managers and line supervisors when a malfunction has occurred in the plant operations.

In public safety, Emergin’s technology interfaces with a number of E911/Computer-Aided Dispatch Systems to proactively notify fire, police and emergency medical services personnel of critical events. By providing timely communications, law enforcement can respond faster to emergency situations. And EMS can respond more rapidly to accidents, potentially saving the lives of humans.

In hospitality, Emergin’s technology interfaces with guest services software, allowing hotels to effectively communicate guest requests to bell caps and housekeepers, improving overall customer service.

These are just a few of the examples of how Emergin is applying service-oriented architectures to help multiple industries improve their communications and provide knowledge that can be used for continuous performance improvement. Over the years, Emergin has grown beyond simple point-to-point connectivity to comprehensive enterprise-wide solutions.

Since 1995, Emergin has helped more than 5,000 enterprise organizations integrate best-in-class technologies and manage vendor relations to improve operational efficiencies, staff productivity and decision-making. A service-oriented architecture approach will promote optimized process flows, vendor designs and performance management while demoting third party vendors that continue to promote closed, proprietary and inflexible systems. Emergin is paving the way to pervasive computing and communications.
